It was early in the morning in the Olympic rainforest on the extreme west coast of Washington State. I think they’re the most magnificent beings on earth. I love solitude, and I love my connection to nature, especially trees. I use mountain climbing techniques to get to the top of trees to study the plants that live up in the treetops. It was a moment of there’s gonna be a before this fall, and there’s gonna be an after this fall, and I didn’t know what that after would be. And I looked around at the stumps that were surrounding me and I thought, Wow, they look a lot like tombstones. I knew that something big had happened to me, and to my body, and to my life at that time, at that moment.
